News Alert

Posted March 28, 2010 - !SAFETY ALERT!
To AMTA Members in the New Jersey, New York City, Connecticut Area
We want to alert you that the AMTA National Office has received information about incidents involving a man soliciting massage therapists under false pretenses in Connecticut, New York City and New Jersey. This person has a history of targeting massage therapists and has recently resurfaced. We want you to use extreme caution, should this person contact you. The recent situations involved a man soliciting massage therapists by telephone to work in a spa. One name given for the spa is ‘Azalea’. He uses the name “Steven” and has given several different last names, including Sung, Min and Yamamoto. He may claim to have found the massage therapist through AMTA’s Find a Massage Therapist® locator service. However, he is not only targeting AMTA members; he may be using a variety of means to find phone numbers for massage therapists.
We have reason to believe this person could be dangerous. If you are contacted by him, please do not respond – hang up on him. It's best to let the authorities handle these matters. If you have received phone calls from him, AMTA recommends you provide the information to local police and advise them that the person has been using the same approach throughout the tri-state area. This is a reminder of the importance of personal safety for massage therapists and to trust your instincts. It's always a good idea to take the same precautions in your professional life as you do in your personal life. If you're ever in a situation that makes you feel uncomfortable, leave immediately. Don't worry about appearing rude or unprofessional. Your safety and well-being is much more important. If you're ever the victim of any wrongdoing, immediately contact your local police. Please share this message with all your colleagues. Everyone should be able to practice massage therapy in a safe and secure environment.

Membership Notice

We, in AMTA NJ, have had a lot of changes. One of which is the beginning of Blast emails to you, the membership. The AMTA NJ Board of Directors would like each of you to know that we are trying to reach out to you with the advancement in technology and our own ability to overcome the reluctance to be more computer friendly. We want you to know getting the information out to you will get easier and more efficient. Bear with us as we become more familiar with getting information out to you through the email blasts. Our goal is to inform you so you can make the decisions you need for your office and practice.

We will still continue to report the Chapter information in the quarterly Newsletters. We just want to reach the membership in a cost effective way faster. National uses email blasts to reach 57,000 members, so we know it works for them. It will be up to you to decide to read your emails or your Newsletter. We will try to limit the emails to only the information that needs to go out to the membership. Know that we respect the member’s privacy so we do not pass your emails onto others. They are for chapter use only.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. Please continue to read ALL the chapter information in Newsletter and emails from the AMTA NJ chapter. As we learn more information we will get it out to you through both. But, please make sure AMTA NJ clears your spam blockers. We do not want you to miss any information we send out in the emails.

Thank you,
The AMTA NJ Board
