****IMPORTANT SAFETY REPORT!!****
Please Read

Posted March 20,08
Dear AMTA NJ Member,
AMTA wants to remind you of the importance of the issue of personal safety. The New York Chapter notified us of a recent incident involving the assault of a massage therapist in New York City by a man impersonating a police officer.

Click here to view the New York Daily News article.

This unfortunate incident reinforces how critical it is to always trust your instincts and take the same precautions in your professional life as you do in your personal life. Always be aware of your surroundings and use common sense when meeting new clients and business associates. If you’re ever in a situation that makes you feel uncomfortable, leave immediately. Never worry about appearing rude or unprofessional. Your safety and well-being is much more important! And always let at least one other person know the name, address and any other pertinent information when going on an out-call appointment.

Personal safety extends to the internet as well. If you get an e-mail that sounds too good to be true, it probably is. And be wary of e-mails that ask for personal or financial information.

We encourage you to take a moment and think about your personal safety. Even though these points may seem like common sense, it’s always a good idea to refresh ourselves from time to time with this information. Please share this message with all of your colleagues. AMTA wants you to be safe and secure when practicing massage therapy.

Sincerely,
AMTA National Communications and Marketing Department

Around Jan 17, 08, you may have received an email from National AMTA requesting your State Certification number in order to be posted on the Locator service "Find a Massage Therapist". This was an oversight by National on heals of the new Legislation in NJ. To Explain- If you are presently State Certified by the State of New Jersey Nursing Board; you are required to post your certification number on ALL printed material. If you are not State Certified, you can NOT use CMT anywhere on your printed material. Reminder- *It is not required to be State Certified, it is your choice. So if you are not State Certified by the Nursing Board you do not need to be concerned with giving National your State Certification number to be listed on the locator service.

At present- the Governor is taking resumes for appointments to the State Massage and Bodywork Board. This Board will license massage and bodywork therapist in NJ. When they are up and running. It will be required to be State Licensed. Then you will need to send National your License number to be listed on the locator service.

If you are interested in being on the State Massage and Bodywork Board, you can send us your resume or directly to the Governor. By sending it to us we can help speed the process of the appointments through.

WE DID IT!! The Governor signed our Bill into Law. NJ is a Licensed State for Massage and Bodywork therapists!

Please note that it does not mean run out a sign up just yet. The law gives us our own Board instead of being under the Nursing Board. So it will take time to develop the Board and the Rules and Regulations to govern the Profession. AMTA will notify the membership as to when to being getting licensed. On 1/7/08 both the Senate and Assembly passed the bill it then went to the Governors desk on 1/13/08. Senate voted Yes {21} No {15} Not Voting {4} Assembly voted Yes {72} No {5} Not Voting {0} Abstains {3}. Governor YES. Please continue to check back to the Government Relations page for more up to date information. You can view both bills which are the now the same version A4455 and S2536 there. Again both A4455 and S2536 are the same law. Click here to read them. S2536

Important Notice: 5/23/2007

The AMTA NJ Board has decided to update the Standing Rules. Below you will find a link with the four present Standing Rules in Green and the new proposed changes to the Standing Rules; one amendment and two proposed rules in Blue. On May 18, 2007 the members voted to Approve the ammended and proposed Standing Rules for the NJ Chapter. The rationale behind these rules is that as the National AMTA grows so too has the amount of work required by the Chapter Board Members. The AMTA NJ Board feels that in order to accomplish the work load required of the Chapter Board, Members of the Board should have continued understanding with regard to the work accomplished by the present and recent past Board for the membership and the understanding of how the National AMTA Bylaws and Policies effect the Chapter and its members. We hope these Standing Rules will provide for efficient and able members of the AMTA NJ Board.
Thank You

Membership Notice

We, in AMTA NJ, have had a lot of changes. One of which is the beginning of Blast emails to you, the membership. The AMTA NJ Board of Directors would like each of you to know that we are trying to reach out to you with the advancement in technology and our own ability to overcome the reluctance to be more computer friendly. We want you to know getting the information out to you will get easier and more efficient. Bear with us as we become more familiar with getting information out to you through the email blasts. Our goal is to inform you so you can make the decisions you need for your office and practice.

We will still continue to report the Chapter information in the quarterly Newsletters. We just want to reach the membership in a cost effective way faster. National uses email blasts to reach 57,000 members, so we know it works for them. It will be up to you to decide to read your emails or your Newsletter. We will try to limit the emails to only the information that needs to go out to the membership. Know that we respect the member’s privacy so we do not pass your emails onto others. They are for chapter use only.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. Please continue to read ALL the chapter information in Newsletter and emails from the AMTA NJ chapter. As we learn more information we will get it out to you through both. But, please make sure AMTA NJ clears your spam blockers. We do not want you to miss any information we send out in the emails.

Thank you,
The AMTA NJ Board
